An opinion on Dr. Subramaniam Swamy's unbeleivable outburst to the new President

An opinion on Dr. Subramaniam Swamy's unbeleivable outburst to the new President, that Indians might support the idea of a "Seperate State Eelam demand" in the event GOSL does not support a Federal system.

G.Amirthalimgham - London UK.

"Sri Lanka has to understand that the Tamil question is not an internal matter of Sri Lanka since any time there is trouble in the island, Tamil refugees flood into India. Hence, it is in India's interest to ensure that there is Tamil-Sinhala amity. This can only be achieved by replacing the present unitary Constitution with a federal Constitution in which the Tamils’ elected representatives manage in their own areas of North east Sri Lanka, selected subjects such as law & order, education and civic amenities through devolution. If Sri Lanka under President Rajapakse remains committed to retaining the unitary Constitution, then it will become inevitable for patriotic Indians in India's national interest, to revive the separate Eelam demand which demand had been put in cold storage since the 1987 Indo-Sri Lanka Accord."

The above statement was made by Dr.Subramaniam Swamy in the Asian Tribune.

The Tamil issue in Sri Lanka is a national issue. It's not a fight between the Tamils and the Sinhalese. It is a struggle to regain the right to self-govern which was lost due to the merger of Tamil regions with the other parts of Sri Lanka by the British. When the British left Sri Lanka after the independence in 1948 there was outcry in the British parliament and concerns for the status of the Tamils. British parliamentarians knew what was in store for the Tamils.

Everyone knows, I hope, how it all started with requests, parliamentary debates, passive and nonviolent demonstrations for an honourable settlement for the Tamil issue. They were all answered with violence by the then Sri Lankan governments that instigated and encouraged the masses to act against the Tamils, thereby creating an institutionalized discrimination, racism and secondary status.

In accordance with the four Indian scriptures: SAMA, PETHA, THAANA were practiced, which the Sri Lankan governments and the politicians did not understand. Then the fourth one, THANDAM is in use today. It is because of this that the authorities are willing to; at least, listen to the grievances of the Tamils. Now, can anyone say that the Tamils took up arms and behaved like terror groups just to terrorize the country? How about the government orchestrated terror against the Tamils in 1958, 1971, 1983 and many more.

Dr.Swamy says: “Sri Lanka has to understand that the Tamil question is not an internal matter of Sri Lanka since any time there is trouble in the island, Tamil refugees flood into India.”

Yes, when East Pakistan (Bangladesh) was ruthlessly controlled by West Pakistan, India sent its troops into East Pakistan echoing the very words that the East Pakistan refugees were pouring into India and creating an International problem and a problem for India.

Dr.Swamy goes on to say: Hence, it is in India's interest to ensure that there is Tamil-Sinhala amity.

Yes, to create this amity as Dr.Swamy says the Sri Lankan president should give up his stand on Unitary Constitution. The least the Tamils can accept is Regional Autonomy. That is the minimum for having suffered and lost so many lives.

The Tamil question has been an Election ploy for all the political parties from the time Sri Lanka gained Independence. This stirred up some of the politically dormant population to react to the call without any basic knowledge of the situation on the ground. We have seen enough of the political circus and do not wish to see anymore.

If anyone wants to bring about a solution they have to forget party politics and come forward with all the representatives of the people of Sri Lanka with one mind, one goal that is: A PERMANENT SOLUTION.

G.Amirthalingam, London, UK.
