Kathmandu, 11 December, (Asiantribune.com): Police arrested over a 100 people, including rights and civil society leaders, from demonstrations organized to mark the 57th International Human Rights Day.

Among the arrested are firebrand rights leader Krishna Pahadi, coordinator of Citizens' Movement for Democracy and Peace (CMDP) Dr Devendra Raj Panday, chief of Informal Service Sector Subodh Pyakurel, and former president of Federation of Nepalese Journalists Taranath Dahal. Several student leaders were also arrested from the demonstrations.

The arrests occurred after rights workers and the civil society decided to observe this year's Human Rights Day as part of the movement against autocratic monarchy stating that realization of human rights is impossible without reinstating absolute democracy.

The individuals were arrested while they tried to enter Ratna Park, an area in central Kathmandu, where the government has banned public gatherings. CMDP started its pro-democracy agitation exactly from this place in July this year and the civil society had announced that it would reclaim the place today.
,br> However, riot police posted plentifully in the area used water canon to prevent the demonstrators from entering the area and arrested the individuals.
