By Bikash Sangraula in Kathmandu

Kathmandu, 13 October, (Asiantribune.com): King Gyanendra announced Wednesday that he has commanded Nepal’s Election Commission to conduct parliamentary polls in 2007.

“We have commanded the Election Commission to conduct parliamentary elections within the year 2062 Bikram Sambat (mid-April, 2007),” said King Gyanendra Wednesday.

In a message to the nation on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami, the tenth day of the biggest festival of Hindus, Dashain, the King has also asked the international community to assist towards making the elections free and fair and has urged the Maoists to give up arms.

The announcement comes less than a week after municipal polls were announced in Nepal for February 2006.

The King has also said that meaningful multiparty democracy requires re-strengthening of representative institutions and that free and fair election is a means to achieving that.
