[b]President ordered to draw an accelerated program to improve the living conditions of Plantation workers.[/b]

[b]Colombo, 29 November, (Asiantribune.com): [/b]The new President of Sri Lanka has taken steps to alleviate the sufferings of the estate workers. Majority of the plantation workers are Tamils of the Indian origin and it is reported that they are suffering under abject poverty and misery.

Mahinda Rajapakse, President of Sri Lanka with the view to improve the living standard of the estate workers has directed Plantation Industries Minister Milroy Fernando to formulate an accelerated programme in compliance with the aspirations envisaged under "Mahinda Chintana".

Sri Lanka President has given priority to this programme to uplift the estate sector workers who have been perennially suffering under abject poverty and misery.

The project report from Minister Milroy Fernando is expected detail a wide range of shortcomings confronting the estate population covering health, education, economic conditions, and unemployment among estate youth, drinking water, land erosion, access roads and passenger transport.
