Presidential election this year – Elections Commissioner

Presidential election this year – Elections Commissioner

From our Colombo Correspondent.

Colombo, 16 August, (Asiantribune.com): Dayananda Dissanayake, Election Commissioner, has informed the Supreme Court that he is making arrangement to hold the Presidential Elections this year.

In his letter to the Court he states that the Gazette Notification issued on December 22, 1999 – the date on which President Chandrika Kumaratunga took oaths publicly for her second term – is a valid legal document. This is bound to raise a hornet’s nest in political circles.

President Chandrika Kumaratunga won the Presidential election held in 1999 November. After she won for the second time defeating Ranil Wickremesinghe she took her on 22 December 1999.

Later she claims that she took oaths for the second time before the Chief Justice in a private ceremony in 2000. Based on this the President’s lawyers argue that she is entitled to run her full term which ends in 2006. But the Election commissioner is now saying that he recognizes only the first swearing in which was held on December 22, 1999 and, accordingly, her six year term ends in December this year.
