Colombo, 11 September, ( LTTE is attempting to smuggle out from Jaffna an academic charged with molesting a 13-year-old Tamil girl who was the domestic servant in his house. K. T. Ganeshalingam, a senior lecturer in politics at the Faculty of Arts, Jaffna University, Jaffna, is better known “Pongu Thamil Ganesh” for his active pro-LTTE role in the Jaffna campus.

He is the political advisor to the LTTE cadres in Jaffna. He is now in Police custody charged with sexual assault on a minor. She was rushed to hospital and she is reported to be in a stable condition, according to sources in the Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

Evidence produce in court has revealed that the teenage girl has been molested by “Ponug Thamil Ganesh” for over 40 times within 6 months. Both come from Pudukuddirripuu in Mullatheevu -- an area controlled by the LTTE. When the case came up for trial on September 6, 2005 the Jaffna Magistrate Srinithi Nandasegaram denied bail and postponed the case. He was not represented by a lawyer in the courts and one of the Jaffna district TNA parliamentarians (proxies of the LTTE) had made a plea to get “Pongu Thamil Ganesh” released on bail.

According to media reports, the girl’s family is under pressure to bring her back to LTTE-controlled area of Mullaitheevu to get a forced confession denying charges against one of their leading LTTE agents in the Jaffna campus. The Jaffna campus is dominated by pro-LTTE academics and student organizations. “Pongu Thamil Ganesh” has been a leader of the Jaffna campus student organisation.
