Protect Mahinda Rajapakse and Douglas Devananda from LTTE assassins --SPUR and WAPS

Melbourne, 27 October, (Asiantribune.com): Society for Peace Unity and Human Rights,(SPUR) an Australian based NGO and the World Alliance for Peace in Sri Lanka (WAPS) have appealed to UN Secretary- General, Kofi Annan, and the Indian Prime Minister of India, Manmohan Singh, to issue an early warning to the LTTE urging them not to target candidates in the current presidential election.

In a joint statement both organization emphasize that most candidates are vulnerable when they are on the election trail and the LTTE methodology has been to target electioneering candidates who are exposed and easily accessible to its assassins. It points out that Rajiv Gandhi,Chandrika Kumaratunga, presidential candidate Gamini Dissanayake were all targeted when they were campaigning in elections.

The joint statement adds that the two main candidates who are likely to be the main targets of the LTTE are Premier Mahinda Rajapakse and Douglas Devananda, leader of Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) --two leaders not favoured by the LTTE.
