Rajapaksa's options

Rajapaksa's options

By Vasantha Raja

Sri Lanka's local government election results have shown clearly that the Sinhalese majority wants peace talks to proceed – a tribute to the country’s Sinhala Buddhists who had been inundated with anti-talks propaganda from Sinhala ultra-nationalists.

The people have, in no uncertain terms, defeated the JVP-JHU challenge to president Rajapaksa's peace efforts by giving his UPFA coalition a landslide victory.

The electorate has thus cleared the path for the president to move fast, to convince the military leadership of the plausibility of his agenda and to strengthen the peace process.

All peace lovers are surely waiting to see his intentions translated into action, whatever he might have said during the presidential election to please his nationalist allies.
