New Delhi, 03 January ( Rajnath Singh, a 54-year- old former college lecturer, who had cut his teeth in student politics, today took over as the eighth president of India's main opposition, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

His innings is going to be an interim arrangement till 2007 as he is made to step into the shoes of L K Advani, who along with Vajpayee founded the BJP 25 years back, was made to resign after a tiff with the parent organisation, the Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sangh (RSS).

Rajnath will be third BJP president in 15-months – Venkaiah Naidu made way to L K Advani after the Lok Sabha debacle and Advani lost his job after he praised the founder of Pakistan, Mohammad Ali Jinnah as a secularist.

'Parushuram' Vajpayee and 'Ram' Advani formally anointed Rajnath at an impressive gathering of workers at the party headquarters here.

"The new job is a bed of thorns. The crown too is of thorns", the former prime minister told him while wishing 'the dynamic leader' as described Rajnath, a successful tenure.
