Wijesekera was one of the UNP rebels who lashed out against the failed leadership of Wickremesinghe. In return Wickremesinghe sacked him from the Working Committee just before he left for India. Wijesekera wanted the UNP to be reformed to meet the new challenges faced by the party.

S.B.Dissanayake, M.H.Mohamed and Rajitha Senaratne are three of the UNP front benchers who attacked Wickremesinghe for sacking Wijesekera.

Dissanayake who ran away to Australia to avoid facing the local government elections knowing that it was going to be a disaster returned to Sri Lanka to defend one of his fellow-MPs who crossed from Chandrika government to join the UNP.
