Ranil can be defeated easily by Mahinda Rajapakse – S. B. Dissanayake, UNP National Organiser

From Our Colombo Correspondent

Colombo, 31 August, (Asiantribune.com): S. B. Dissanayake, the National Organiser of the UNP, the main opposition party, has told a few former ministers and MPs of the UNP who had visited him in hospital that Ranil Wickremesinghe can be defeated even by Ratnasiri Wickremanayake, former Prime Minister of the PA government.

“But Mahinda Rajapakse has a better chance of defeating Ranil hands down,” he is quoted as telling the UNPers.

UNPers and sources close to S. B. Dissanayake believe that Ranil Wickremesinghe is keen on his National Organiser remaining in prison until the elections are over. He was moved from prison to a bed in the National Hospital after he complained of a chronic back ache. Dissanayake was jailed for two years on charges of scandalizing the Supreme Court.

UNP insiders believe that Wickremesinghe feels threatened by Dissanayake who might become a hero overnight if he is let out of prison before elections. Besides, Wickremesinghe feels he has gained ground on his own after the successful march from Galle to Colombo without S. B. Dissanayake playing any role in it.

He also hopes to win the presidential race without S. B. Dissanayake. If he wins with the backing of Dissanayake the kudos would go to his National Organiser making him a potential threat to his leadership in the future, according UNP sources.

Wickremesinghe is known to keep potential rivals at a safe distance. One of them is Sirisena Cooray – the man who promoted Wickremesinghe into the premier’s chair.
