Ranil - have you consigned Buddha Sasana Report 2002 to the dustbin of history?

Colombo, 01 November, (Asiantribune.com); Gamini Perera, Co-ordinator of the Joint Committee of Budhhist Organizations in an open letter to United National Party’s Presidential candidate Ranil Wickremasinghe, has pointed out, “your promise to construct the largest dagoba in Sri Lanka, there is no known request from any quarter for such a venture.” He further said “Nor is there a basis to consider that such a venture would serve any useful purpose or is necessary in order to foster or protect the Buddha Sasana in Sri Lanka.”

Gamini Perera who is also a former President of the Dharmavijaya Foundation, Colombo, writes “On the contrary there are thousands of Buddhist places of worship that lack funds for any form of maintenance. They are crumbling or are in a highly dilapidated state. Many of them are in use by devotees for worship and to perform their religious observances, but these places lack even the basic facilities.”

He underlined that those were allied matters which must be included in any Presidential manifesto and rightfully take a much higher priority over the wasteful construction of the largest dagoba which will absorb hundreds of millions of scarce public resources unless you have decided to fund it yourself.
