Ranil Wickremesinghe must go for the UNP to win

Ranil Wickremesinghe must go for the UNP to win -- Dr. Rajitha Senaratne

Colombo, 21 December, (Asiantribune.com): United National Party Parliamentarian Rajitha Senaratne came down hard on the party leadership and insisted it should be revamped soon.

After the latest defeat in the presidential election, Dr. Senaratne has been vehement critic of Ranil Wickremesinghe leadership. The UNP is now divided between those who back Wickremesinghe and those who want him out. With increasing voices raised against the Wickremesinghe leadership he is fighting with his back to the wall.

In an interview with the "Asian Tribune," Senaratne blamed Wickremesinghe squarely for the defeat the party suffered at the Presidential election. He said: "President Rajapkse is person capable of getting close to the common man. We also need a leader like that." He added that the party’s outlook needs to be changed.

Reports emerged soon after the election, that Wickremesinghe, who lost 13 elections, would step down from the party leadership and later it was decided to restructure the party with Wickremesinghe continuing in his post.

But Senaratne maintains that there would be a change in the leadership soon. An increasing number of party members believe that the leadership should be changed.
