Ranil Wickremesinghe opens fire on LTTE - last minute bid to win Sinhala votes

Colombo, 09 November, ( In the last lap leading to the presidential election Ranil Wickremesinghe has suddenly changed tack to woo the Sinhala majority vote by claiming that the UNP was responsible for splitting the LTTE and trapping the LTTE inside "an international safety net.".

Facing the backlash rising against of the Cease-fire Agreement, signed hastily to accommodate the LTTE under Norwegian pressure (see Ambassador A. B. Goonatillake's speech) Wickremesinghe is campaigning now to meet the biting charges of surrendering to the LTTE.

Political observers consider that this attempt to distance himself from the LTTE in the last stages is mainly due to the failure of his campaign to win Sinhala votes by projecting himself as the modern "Parakramabahu in jeans". (Parakramabahu is a hero in Sri Lanka history who unified the nation under one umbrella.)

He has also promised to build the largest dagoba for the Buddhist without realizing that the largest dagobas are in Sri Lanka. With one eye cast on winning more Sinhala-Buddhist votes he is making a last minute bid to project an anti-LTTE image, according to political observers.
