SLMC protests against Ferial's peace mission: NUA member

SLMC protests against Ferial's peace mission: NUA member tells to stop acting 'silly'

By Munza Mushtaq – Asian Tribune

Colombo, 20 February, (Asiantribune.com):The country's pre dominant Muslim party, the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) has expressed their 'displeasure' over National Unity Alliance (NUA) leader Ferial Ashraff's decision to be part of the Government delegation at this week's peace talks in Geneva.

The party also claimed that Mrs. Ashraff's decision was against a certain agreement the NUA and the SLMC had reached. According to a SLMC spokesman the two parties had come to an understanding that unless the Government permits the participation of a separate Muslim delegation at peace talks, both parties will not be part of the process.

"But Mrs. Ashraff has violated our agreement by being part of the Government delegation," the spokesman lamented.

However Mrs. Ashraff has pointed out that instead of rebelling againstthe Government or the LTTE its better to be part of the process and then insist for the Muslim community's rights.

The NUA Secretary General and Deputy Media Minister Cegu Izzadeen told the “Asian Tribune” that the SLMC is only now making a big fuss, but it was their leader Rauff Hakeem who was part of the Government peace delegation when talks were held with the LTTE during the United National Front regime, and at that time he never even attempted to speak on behalf of the community nor even demand for a Muslim delgation.
