New Delhi, 28 October, ( Sonia Gandhi, the Congress party chief has named one of her close lieutenants Ghulam Nabi Azad to head the coalition government in Indian Kashmir.

Azad, 56, a native of Jammu and Kashmir will take over on November 2 from Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, who has been running a coalition of his People’s Democratic Party and the Congress supported by the Marxists and some independents under a power sharing agreement signed three years ago.

The agreement hammered as the electorate returned a split verdict provided for Congress takes over of the reins mid way through six-year term of the assembly. Mufti’s PDP is a junior partner in the alliance.

There was some suspense till Thursday evening whether the Congress would stake its turn since the state was reeling under the impact of a devastating earthquake that had struck the region on October 8.

Sonia Gandhi chose to secure power for the party after sensing the mood of the party legislators in Srinagar with some 20 of them even threatening to quit the assembly if there was no change of guard.
