Colombo, 17 August, (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lanka has initiated a major campaign to mobilize international support against acts of terrorism perpetrated by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Immediately after a high level meeting chaired by President Chandrika Kumaratunga following the brutal assassination of foreign minister Lakshman Kadirgamar by suspected Tamil rebels, an action plan was initiated.

As the first step of the action plan, Foreign Secretary H.M.G. S. Palihakkara and Peace Secretariat chief Jayantha Dhanapala briefed the diplomats on the danger of terrorism faced by Sri Lanka and urged the international community to take practical and effective measures to Suppress and prevent terrorism. Colombo based Ambassadors and High Commissioners and a large number of concurrently accredited envoys based in New Delhi and other Asian capitals and heads of international agencies attended the briefing.

President Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse made the same appeal to senior ministers and government representatives including Foreign Ministers of India, Pakistan, Norway and New Zealand. The two leaders directly blamed the LTTE for the murder of Kadirgamar, whose relentless campaign resulted in the proscription of the Tiger movement in many countries.
