[b]Colombo, 07 October, (Asiantribune.com): [/b]A total of 13 candidates including Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremasinghe will be contesting in the Presidential poll schedule for 17 November this year.
According to a report, out of the 14 persons who deposited the money to contest in the polls, Seinu Labdeen Nasheer Ahamed was an absentee at the time of filing the nominations today at the Department of Elections in Colombo.

The nominations were closed at 11.00 a.m today and a 30 minute period was allocated to raise objections.

The election symbol for Mahinda Rajapakse is Betel, the symbol of United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and Elephant the symbol of UNP for Ranil Wickremasinghe.

Dayananda Dissanayake, Commissioner of Elections addressing the candidates announced that any violations of election law will result a re-election in the respective polling booths. Consequently the alternative step will have to be taken on the 19th since the elections should be completed by 21st November 2005 according to the election law. The Commissioner of Elections requested all the candidates to instruct their party members and supporters to adhere to those rules and assist in a smooth functioning at the elections avoiding unnecessary delays in the final result.
