THE SRI LANKAN BUDDHISTS PLANTED A SIXTEEN FEET (16') BUDDHIST STATUE OVERNIGHT IN THE MARKET PLACE OF TRINCOMALEE WITH THE SUPPORT OF THE SRI LANKKAN ARMY AND THE MAXIST JVP. THE TRINCOMALEE PUBLIC WENT TO THE DISTRICT COURT AND APPEALED AGAINST THE ACTION OF THE BUDDHISTS. THE COURT AFTER HEARING THE CASE ORDERED THE BUDDHA STATUE TO BE REMOVED IMMEDIATELY. THIS DECISION OF THE COURTS BROUGHT ETHNIC TENSION TO THE PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE OF THE TAMILS AND THE SINHALESE. THREE TAMILS WERE KILLED IN FRONT OF THE BUDDHA STATUE BY SINHALESE BUDDHISTS.
