Sri Lankans sceptical about British promises to curb LTTE

Sri Lankans sceptical about British promises to curb LTTE fund-raising

By Neville de Silva - Diplomatic Editor Asian Tribune

Colombo, 22 March (Asiantribune.com): Sri Lankans generally are not impressed by the latest promises of the British government to help curb LTTE fund-raising in the UK.

A wide cross-section of Sri Lankans interviewed by Asian Tribune since Britain said in mid-March it would help crackdown on fund raising by the LTTE among the substantial Tamil community in the country believes that this is only an attempt to placate the Colombo government and London is not serious about it.

During talks that Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera had in London with the British Minister of State for the Home Department Tony McNulty earlier this month, the British side reportedly said it would take action to curb illegal fund raising by the Tamil Tigers, an organisation banned by the UK Government as a foreign terrorist organisation.
