Stop LTTE killings before talks begin -- Anandsangaree

Stop LTTE killings before talks begin -- Anandsangaree

London, 24 August, (Asiantribune.com) In his latest statement addressed to President Chandrika Kumaratunga, the Tamil United Liberation Front Leader, V. Anandasangaree has warned against resuming talks with the LTTE without proper guarantees to end violations of human rights, killings and child conscription.

He states: “The killings go on unabated despite the condemnation of the International Community. It will be treacherous if the Government commences talks with the LTTE without an understanding from them that they will stop killings.”

He has listed and condemned the following violations by the LTTE: 1) non-stop killings; (2) conscription of child soldier from poor Tamil parents hit by the tsunami; (3) forcing Tamil expatriates visiting friends and relatives to pay one sterling pound day for every day they’ve been out; (4) interfering with the administration in Government–controlled areas preventing officers from exercising their independent judgment; (5) holding Tamils in detention camps and dark prison rooms without any access to facilitators or human rights organizations; (6) interfering with civilians in Government-controlled areas

Highlighting the failure of the Cease fire Agreement he says that the Government should insist in the LTTE laying down arms and “seek government security if required.” A TULF spokesman said that this is not unusual as the LTTE is given protection in crossing over to government territory or when they flown in helicopters from Vanni to the East or Colombo.
