Stewart Bell, National Post

Toronto - The Tamil Tigers have been added to Canada's list of outlawed terrorist organizations, the National Post has learned.

The designation was to be finalized yesterday, a day after Cabinet met to accept a recommendation from the Canadian Security Intelligence Service.

An official announcement was scheduled for Monday.

The Tigers are the 39th terrorist group to be outlawed under the Anti-Terrorism Act, and the first added to the list by the new Conservative government.

The move was spearheaded by Stockwell Day, the Minister of Public Safety, who in opposition repeatedly condemned the Liberals for not outlawing the Tigers.

The decision means it will now be a criminal offence to participate in the activities of the Tamil Tigers, formally known as the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, or LTTE, a Sri Lankan separatist group responsible for more than 160 suicide bombings. For example, anyone convicted of financially supporting the Tigers could be imprisoned for up to 10 years.
This was in one of the canadian news sites...

"This is not us taking sides," said Foreign Affairs Minister Peter MacKay. "This is very much about expressing a desire to see the peace process progress."

MacKay said he spoke Monday with Norway's foreign minister and promised full Canadian assistance, including an offer to host peace talks in Canada if desired.

Even though Canadain govt. say it is because of the desire to see the CFA progresses, LTTE killed again SLA soldiers and civilians.

Don't you think, it is time show the LTTE behaviour, at present, to European Union too.
Before, the reports were that LTTE is threatning the canadian tamil community to pay 'taxes' or they are not allowed to enter eelam.

Now, with this ban, canadian tamils cannot goto LTTE controlled areas anyway.
It is amazing to read how some are embrazing the harassment, without fighting it.

What the above quote says is if LTTE can not harass, abuse or extort money from tamils in Canada, LTTE will do it in SriLanka
OR
The tamils will not be allowed to their birth places.

What a shame.
Those tamils are better off living in Canada or buying a piece of land in Colombo.

Perhaps the statement below will enlighten those,
Collacott(previous Candian embassador to SL )makes a startling revelation which all countries must take note of. "The Tigers and their supporters in Canada and particularly in Toronto had become adept at delivering votes from the Tamil community to Liberal candidates at election times and as long as this support continued the Liberals were prepared to let the Tigers have virtual free rein to carry out their activities in this country." He reveals how a terror group has held a legitimate government of a powerful state to ransom by creating a bloc vote and manipulating it. It is doing so in the UK as well. Most economic refugees who run the risk of being sent back home, if peace returns to SriLanka have no option but do as the LTTE says so that they can stay longer and lead a better life. Any other terror group could emulate the LTTE and adopt the same tactics to make puppets of foreign governments. Thus, both the bullet and the ballot have become potent weapons in the hands of the LTTE. This bodes ill for global democracy.

The Ban rules:

1) Ban in law and fully implemented.
2) Ban in law but no actions
3) No ban and no actions

Most of the countries follow rule #2 (except India which was following rule #1).

Canada was in rule #3, but now switching to ?????

By the way, last week, the current Canadian government has severed all ties with democratically elected Palestine government.

The downside of this is, now the moderate tamils in canada will be more symphathetic to LTTE. Tamils nature is when they are pushed against the wall, they get united.

My dear friend honestly don't mean any offence to you,but do you really think that moderate Tamils in Canada after bearing up so much pain and harrasment from these chaps will give a damn about them getting banned in Canada ?

Of course Canadian Tamils can visit Jaffna just like the US Tamils anytime. The LTTE ban in the US didn't stop Tamils from going to Jaffna at all. They don't need to go through the LTTE check points instead can fly to Jaffna direct.

What is expected from the Government is to be firm and ban LTTE from having bogus political offices in Jaffna designed to extort money from these people. Without these vultures hanging around these people can meet their kith and kin in peace.
