TN politics cast new shadow over India-Lanka ties

TN politics cast new shadow over India-Lanka ties

By M Rama Rao – Reporting from New Delhi

New Delhi, 09 January, (Asiantribune.com): With assembly elections looming large on the horizon, Sri Lanka factor has begun to assume fresh importance in the Tamilnadu politics. More so since a blatantly pro-LTTE party like MDMK of Mr Vaiko is a partner in the ruling alliance in Delhi. Vaiko has already managed to stall the long planned India- Sri Lanka defence deal.

The latest trigger for bringing into play the Lanka factor was provided by Colombo itself with the Sri Lanka navy firing at a group of Rameswaram fishermen, who from all indications were fishing in and around Kachatheevu Island in Palk Bay.

One report from Chennai quoting an injured fisherman said "The Sri Lankan Navy officials asked us to stop the boat near Kachatheevu at 4.30 a.m on Sunday, when we were returning after completing the fishing operation".
