Towards a peaceful settlement and justice for all in SL

Towards a peaceful settlement and justice for all in SL

By S. Makenthiran B.A., FCCA

Sri Lanka or Ceylon as it was endearingly known is the home of three communities, Sinhalese, Tamils and Muslims. As a Tamil Canadian, though forced out and living far away from the land of my birth, I wish my country of origin peace, prosperity and justice for all. The three segments of minorities – Northeast (Eelam) Tamils, Upcountry Tamils and Muslims - have all suffered at the hands of the majority Sinhalese. The racist policies were started with independence by the father of Sinhalese racism, D, S. Senanayake, followed by S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, his wife, daughter and other successors to his leadership.

D.S.Senanayake, in blatant violation of human rights, made over one million Upcountry Tamils stateless and started settling Sinhalese in the Tamil homeland of Eelam, like the Jews in Palestine. S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike deprived Tamils of their language rights by making Sinhala only the official language. Srimavo Bandaranaike expelled half million Upcountry Tamils to India. J.R. Jayawardena caused widespread massacre of Eelam Tamils and caused over 800,000 Tamils to flee the country and seek refuge all over the world, and may be one million Tamils internally displaced. The foreign states sided with the majority in the carnage and Tamils were orphaned. The fate of the Tamils was like that of the Jews at the hands of the Nazis and Palestinians at the hands of Israelis.
