Two days of rigmarole ended in Geneva: People are the losers.

The Talks between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ended on 23 February with a note -may be optimistic or pessimistic, about which I dare not wish to gamble. The reality was, in the midst of uncertainties, at last the Talks were held, again in the midst of two days of uncertainties, the talks ended and the parties to the conflict have agreed to meet again in Geneva in April.

In between now and April, it is everyone's guesswork about the next round of talks. There may be slip between the cup and the lips. An analyst told in a conversation with me, "sometime even the cup may break." It is better to hope for the best than to be a doomsday soothsayer.

The two-day talks ended with a statement issued by the Norwegian facilitators – said to be a compromise formulae.
