United National Party has violated an 'age old tradition', claims Chairman of the Islamic Solidarity of North America

By Munza Mushtaq -- Reporting for Asian Tribune

The United National Party (UNP) has sullied an 'age old tradition' by nominating a Mayoral candidate hailing from a majority, although the party had to correctly nominate a minority member to the candidature of Mayor for the Colombo Municipal Council, alleged Reyyaz Salley, Chairman of the Islamic Solidarity of North America.

Citing reason for his claim, Mr. Salley noted that it had been customary in the UNP to take turns in nominating a majority and a minority community member as a mayoral candidate for the CMC. "But this year the tradition has been broken, because the UNP leadership seems to have yielded to the pressures of Killy Maharajah (Sirasa Television Channel owner) and the likes," he charged.

He queried as to why the UNP leadership cannot take a strong decision instead of playing according to the whims and fancies of certain media bosses.
