[b]United States sends top politico-military official to Sri Lanka for talks on January 23-24[/b]

[b]Washington, D.C. 14 January ( [/b]The United States government is sending the third ranking official of its Department of State Under Secretary Nicholas Burns to Sri Lanka for talks with top officials of the Government of Sri Lanka to assess the current deteriorating situation in this Indian Ocean island state.

Ambassador Burns, who is expected to be in Colombo on January 23 and 24, will also meet with Norwegian Special Envoy Erik Solheim and others to discuss the current status of the peace process.

His visit to Sri Lanka is at a time the separatist Tamil Tigers, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) have stepped up its offensive against Sri Lankan government forces in the northern and eastern provinces while the government has so far maintained remarkable restraint.

Washington sources told "Asian Tribune" that Under Secretary Burns, who has scheduled a visit to New Delhi on January 22 and 23, will discuss the Sri Lankan situation with senior officials in the Indian government.
