University Teachers slam Ranil for sacrificing human rights

University Teachers slam Ranil for sacrificing human rights to remain in power

Colombo, 02 November, (Asiantribune.com): Presenting a grim picture of LTTE violence descending into “an orgy of killings” – one a day in October -- the latest report of the University Teachers for Human Rights (Jaffna) Sri Lanka, UTHR(J) (Bulletin No. 39) has blasted the presidential candidate, Ranil Wickremesinghe for his contemptuous disregard for the violations of human rights as long as his political interests are safeguarded.

“The UNP candidate Ranil Wickremesinghe has long been openly contemptuous of human rights and democracy and would happily countenance any extent of killing in the North-East as long as it does not challenge his power in the South,” states the UTHR (J) report released on November 1, 2005..

It added: “Where the LTTE is concerned, it is the “political work” for which the Cease-fire Agreement gave them the green light. The number of circumstances where people can fall fatally foul of the LTTE is so alarmingly high that it is hardly possible to play safe.”
