UNP to contest in the elections for local bodies

UNP to contest in the elections for local bodies, except those in the North and East

From Asian Tribune Colombo correspondent

Colombo, 09 February, (Asiantribune.com): The second attempt by the United National Party to postpone the scheduled elections for the Local Government Authorities in Sri Lanka failed on Wednesday as the Appeal Court dismissed the writ application filed by the party seeking a restraining order on Elections Commissioner Dissanayake preventing him from holding the elections until the electoral registers for the year 2005 prepared.

The Appeal Court dismissed the earlier writ application filed by the party seeking a restraining order to postpone the elections for the Local Government Authorities and allowed the party to file fresh application seeking the order.

The main Opposition United National Party filed this writ application claiming that names of five to six per cent of their party members have been omitted from electoral register for the year 2004.
