Colombo, 13 November, (Asiantribune.com); Just a few days ahead of the November 17 crucial Presidential polls, the main opposition - - United National Party - - vowed that they would win elections with a good chunk of 55-60% of votes in the country. On an upbeat note Deputy General Secretary, Tissa Attanayake, said the party has completed 80 percent of the election propaganda “successfully” and has virtually bagged the victory.

“Our victory will not hang on a paper thin majority. We are sure of winning 55-60% of the voter bank,” Tissa Attanayake told the “Asian Tribune.”

In a surprise move, the LTTE chose not to back either Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse or his rival Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe at the Presidential race and said they would stand neutral. The Tamil National Alliance, after a meeting with the LTTE leadership followed suit. Asked whether this decision would negatively impact on the UNP since minority votes are known to be in favor of Wickremesinghe, he said it would not be so.

“Wickremesinghe does not represent a particular group of people in North East alone. We would be elected by the majority of Sri Lankan”, he said. “What we also want for the LTTE is to be neutral and let the people decide who they want as the leader. Let them decide who is capable of bringing peace to the country”.
