Unreliable Ranil facing another party crisis

Unreliable Ranil facing another party crisis

Colombo, 06 February, (Asiantribune.com): It is official. Six UNPers are running to grab the Mayoral seat after the next local government elections. They are former Party General Secretary Sirisena Cooray, Party’s Anuradhapura District Organiser Tilanga Sumathipala, National Olympic Committee chief Hemasiri Fernando, Deputy Mayor Asath Sally, former Deputy Mayor Omar Kamil and former UNP Treasurer Bodhi Ranasinghe, says the General Secretary of the party MP Tissa Attanayake.

He said that the national nominations committee will make a decision by February 15.

Ranil Wickremesinghe, the leader of the party, is under fire for backing away from the promise he gave to Sirisena Cooray to make him the next Mayor. The promise was given before the last presidential election when he brought in Cooray to the party to assist him his election campaign. In fact, his promise was not to make him the Mayor but to make the Governor of the Western Province who was to head the local government authorities of the province under his plans for reforming the administration.
