[b]Guwahati, 11 February, ([/b] Five civilian and a security man were killed and several injured as a result of an uprising against the Army operation in Tinisukia district of the Northeastern state of Assam on Friday.

The incident took place when at least fifteen thousand people agitating came out to the street in protest against the death of one Ajit Mahanta of Kakapathar area of the district, allegedly whilst in the Indian army custody on February 4. Army picked up the youth suspecting his links with the rebel outfit Unitd Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA).

Local people of the area said that the youth was innocent.

The people of the Kakapathar area had been protesting against the incident since last four days and Friday’s protest took a violent turn as the strong mob set ablaze one police station, one post office, one railway station, and pelted stones at passing vehicles and security men leading to police firing.
