US fear Tamil Tigers’ ability to smuggle arms and export bomb making capabilities - American expert

By Sugeeswara Senadhira – Bureau Chief, Asian Tribune. Colombo

A top American expert on Sri Lanka said that Washington was highly concerned over the capabilities of the Sri Lankan Tamil Tigers to smuggle arms across countries and to export its bomb making capabilities to other terrorist groups.

Bredan O’Duffy of the University of London said that the US role vis-à-vis Sri Lanka was understandable in the context of the post-9/11 era. He said Washington feared Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE)'s ability to move arms and weapons from one part of the world to another and to export its bomb making capabilities to other groups.

O’Duffy, who was on a lecture tour in South Asia said this at the Institute of Peace and Conflict Studies in New Delhi. The IPCS is headed by Major General Dipanker Banerjee, former executive director of the Colombo-based Regional Centre for Strategic Studies.

While justifying the reason for Washington’s hardline attitude towards terrorist organisations, O'Duffy, who is an American living in London, however urged the US to lift the declaration of the LTTE as a terrorist organisation. "It is too draconian," he said, referring to the classification. "It will be more advisable to create a probationary status for the LTTE.”
