Washington, D.C. 6 February (Asiantribune.com): The most recent pronouncements by leading personalities of the United States administration clearly reflect the commitment of the United States to safeguard Sri Lanka’s territorial integrity and the support it gives to pursue a durable peace in Sri Lanka, said Sri Lanka ambassador to the U.S. Bernard Goonetilleke addressing a large gathering assembled to commemorate Sri Lanka’s 58th National Day here in the U.S. capital.

The conflict in Sri Lanka has gone through several phases in the past few years, and with considerable patience and foresight of Sri Lanka’s political leadership and the support of the international friends, Sri Lanka has been able to halt the sliding backwards of the peace process, he further said.

Sri Lankans in the Greater Washington area last Saturday commemorated the 58th National Day at a colorful ceremony held at the auditorium of the University of the District of Colombia, an event organized by the Sri Lanka embassy, attended by almost one thousand persons, showcased Sri Lanka at its best – its religious practices, cultural diversity and hopes and aspirations for the future.
