Washington, D.C. 01 March (Asiantribune.com): The United States joined Japan, Norway and the European Union, known as the Co-chairs of the Tokyo Donors’ Conference, in welcoming the renewed commitment by the Government of Sri Lanka and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) to their 2002 cease-fire agreement, states a release issued here by the U.S. Department of State.

Representatives of the Government of Sri Lanka and the rebel Tamil Tigers met for discussions in Geneva February 22-23 to discuss the proper implementation of the 2002 cease-fire agreement. The two sides met after the Tigers unilaterally withdrew from talks in March 2003.

The Co-chairs stressed "the importance of the parties implementing these commitments on the ground so as to build confidence and a conducive environment for progressing towards lasting peace for all peoples in Sri Lanka."
