By Munza Mushtaq – Reporting from Colombo

Colombo, 08 December, (Asiantribune.com): The Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) today urged the Government and the LTTE to do their 'utmost' in re-opening the channels for direct dialogue at the local level, owing the recent spate of incidents in the North East. The Monitors also urged the international community to use their influence in order to arrest the tense situation and make way for renewed peace talks.

"Only then can practical problems on the ground be solved and the current situation calm down," SLMM Head Hagrup Haukland said in a news release.

While intimating that the recent escalation of violence was jeopardizing the Ceasefire Agreement, thereby endangering the whole peace process, the Monitors also strongly condemned the cowardly attacks that have resulted in the deaths of several Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers and Tamil civilians, and injured many.
