Washington, D.C. 7 January (Asiantribune.com): Despite there is greater awareness in Washington that Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) does not necessarily represent the interests of the Tamil minority, Sri Lanka’s foreign minister Mangala Samaraweera, in an exclusive interview to Asian Tribune, confessed that he was not very positive if Washington saw Tiger terrorism and Tamil aspirations as two distinct issues.
However, Samaraweera noted that there is greater support for Sri Lanka in Washington and the United States is giving a considerable attention to his country’s national issue and that he was satisfied the positive response he received from Secretary Condoleezza Rice downward.
Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera was in Washington this week on a diplomatic endeavor, meeting U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and her top South Asia Bureau officials, officials of the Treasury Department and Members of the Congress which included chairman of the powerful Senate Foreign Relations Committee Richard Lugar to apprise them of the current developments in Sri Lanka.
He also had discussions with the Under Secretary of the Department of Defense, the Deputy Coordinator for Counter Terrorism, the Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Crimes of the Department of the Treasury and the Deputy Attorney General of the United States.
