Colombo, 09 May, (Asiantribune.com): In an interview with the "Asian Tribune" Sirisena Cooray speaking about the Colombo Municipal Council elections, says: "We have only little time, but I am confident of winning. We will win in Colombo hands down."

Here is the full text of the interview:

Question: Can you detail the implications of the decision of the Supreme Court for the UNP in the forthcoming Municipal elections? In particular the legal issues involved in it: Example: is it fair to penalize the voters and candidates because of a legal technicality?

Sirisena Cooray: We went before the Appeal Court and the Supreme Court precisely because we felt that the rejection of the entire UNP list meant denying UNPers in the city of Colombo their fundamental right to vote for a party of their choice. And you know that a majority of Colombo's citizens are supporters of the UNP. The UNP always wins in Colombo, whatever the election. I should also say that the candidate in question was more than 19 years of age when the nominations were filed. He was fully eligible to vote and to contest under the 2005 voting list.

We will win in Colombo hands down – Srisena Coorey

I have been an UNP supporter life long. However its dismal performance in Colombo Municpality means it will not get my vote. Colombo has been systematically degenerated and the Council has simply encouragedthis. The town planning has resulted in Ugly development. The new Marine drive is an avenue of garbage , not made today or yesterday but over a year! The traffic is horrendous. Access to the new marine drive is blocked at the very entry to the road. Why build this road one may ask? The sky line is littered with numerous bill boards degrading the environment. It looks as if Sri Lankan drivers have nothing better to do but gaze at ugly bill boards. Election posters can be pasted anywhere including electric cabinets, telecom cabinets and literally anywhere. In short there is no control. The opposition if elected will do no better as these flagrant viloations dont even pass their imagiantion. Indeed elected reps in SL are an absolute wase of ftime.
