From our Colombo Correspondent

Colombo, 28 February,(Asiantribune.com): Sri Lankan Foreign Minister Mangala Samaraweera launching the official website in support of the Sri Lanka's official candidate for the prestigious Secretary General post of the United Nations yesterday said the United Nations needs a balanced leadership - apolitical and independent, for its future survival.

"Dhanapala, therefore, is to my mind the ideal Secretary General for the UN at this defining moment in its history", Minister Samaraweera said.

"For all countries, specially for countries like Sri Lanka a world without the UN would be a dangerous place", Minister Samaraweera addressing the ceremony to launch the website ( http://www.jayanthadhanapala.info) in Colombo said.

"However those of us who supported the UN must not do so blindly; we must have the courage to point out its shortcomings and demands that they be corrected", he added.

"That is why it is imperative that the UN finds itself a leader who is able to marshal the necessary political goodwill to renew the Organization, consolidate its strengths, and rectify its shortcomings. The UN needs the leadership of a person who has the vision, experience and diplomatic skills to re-engineer the Organization, so that it will be able to meet the challenges ahead, and the person to me- is undoubtedly Jayantha Dhanapala", he said.
