Whither Tamil Nationalism?

Whither Tamil Nationalism?

By K.T.Rajasingham

It is high time that Tamils took stock of their position about providing their support to the present Government of Sri Lanka led by Mahinda Rajapakse. They have to take a crucial decision whether it is worth their while to support any government that is being led by Sinhla leadership in the future or whether it would be worth their while to turn their interest in promoting the Tamil national interest nationally as well as internationally. At present, undoubtedly Tamils are being made use as a tool to advance the political mileage of the Sinhla polity and nothing else.

The new man who heads the country, Mahinda Rajapakse, Executive President, is said to be a man with common touch, but so far he has amply proved as a man ‘without the common touch with the aspirations of the Sri Lanka Tamils, in particular.’

In the run up to the presidential election, almost all the Tamil political parties which opposed the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) supported him. Almost all the anti-LTTE Tamil political parties openly expressed their support to Mahinda Rajapakse. It began with EPDP and then followed by PLOTE, TamilEela Viduthalai Pulikal (TVMP) and EPRLF (Varathar Wing) . They expressed their support thus inviting the wrath of Prabakaran and the LTTE by expressing their support to Mahinda Rajapakse. They took great risks of also being subject to possible reprisals from Ranil Wickremasinghe who would have gone all out to suppress these Tamil parties in order to win back the favour of Prabhakaran.
