Will Mahinda Rajapakse preside over the disintegration of Sri Lanka?

By K.T.Rajasingham

Confusing political scenario is emerging in Sri Lanka. On the one front the Sri Lanka Government led by President Mahinda Rajapakse and on the other side there is the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam led by its leader Velupillai Prabakaran. Both these political actors jointly and separately are pulling the country apart. So far there is no solution in sight to the political issues the country is presently confronted with. In the current impasse the danger of an impending bloody war and the disintegration of Sri Lanka are looming large.

The million dollar questions are -

Will there be a war in the country shortly?

Will the results of a prolonged war this time divide the country on ethnic lines?

Will Mahinda Rajapakse preside over the disintegration of Sri Lanka?

To begin with, on 19th November 2005, Mahinda Rajapakse was sworn in as the fifth Executive President of Sri Lanka. But earlier, while campaigning in the Presidential election, Mahinda, Rajapakse had promised that his government would pursue a new peace process to replace the one backed by Norway.
